Bontoc Igorot Headhunter Wooden Shield

c.a. Early–Mid 20th century • Cordillera, Northern Philippines

Authentic headhunter shield from the Bontoc people, carved from a single piece of hardwood and bound with thick woven rattan. It features a subtly curved face that hugs the body, a deep hand grip carved into the reinforced center, and a distinctive V-cut at the lower edge—a functional form traditionally associated with pinning an opponent. Its surface shows a rich, old black patina from age and handling. This is a scarce and desirable example of Cordillera martial material culture.

  • Single-piece hardwood with original rattan lashings
  • Curved defensive profile; reinforced central boss with carved grip
  • Iconic V-cut lower notch; classic Bontoc form
