A superb traditional shield dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. It features a highly stylized human figure and is complete with its original rattan binding still present. This is especially rare and desirable since many of these shields have replacement leather cord. In addition, the back features classic tattoo motifs specific to the Kalinga warrior which signify rank, status and battle achievements. It is in good condition with some evidence of worm holes to the upper right side. It shows extensive wear and use and has acquired a dark brown varied patina as seen in the photos. A Kalinga warrior can be seen in the last photo holding a similar shield.
