Description

This lovely rounded bowl with fluted body is among the most desirable and coveted artifacts produced by the mountain tribes. Ceremonial bowls of this age and phenomenal quality are seldom if ever available for sale. It features two relief-carved animal heads (likely pigs) which serve as knob-like handles. Its delicate hoof-like feet transition elegantly form the base of the bowl. It shows significant wear and has been used for generations. As would be expected there is some residual salt in its interior. Its flat lid is partially eroded and one edge shows evidence of being chewed by rats. It has a magnificent encrusted varied black patina turning to red.

Origin: Philippines, Northern Luzon, Kankanay People
Period: 19th Century
Materials: Reddish Hardwood (Possibly Narra), salt
