Philippine Shield and Spear Set

Sold. (8 photos on file)

Description

I was fortunate to acquire this terrific shield and spear set with documented provenance. The classic shield of angular shape resembles a highly stylized human form. What makes it special is that it has not two, but "three" rows of rattan binding which is ALL still intact. The binding is a very important feature on these shields! The horizontal stitched binding held the shield together in combat if it was struck and cracked by a blow from a spear or axe. The spear is also special in the sense the it shows very old construction having a bamboo shaft. The spear head is tightly secured with rattan around its base instead of the iron collar so commonly seen on these spears. Both pieces are in great condition given their age. A photocopy of the unsigned letter from the previous owner from 1963 is seen below.

Period: 19th century
Materials: Shield: Wood, Rattan, Charcoal Oil Paint, Spear: Forged Iron, Bamboo, Rattan
