Here's a classic and rare Kalinga war shield. For each one of these special painted shields, there exists ten or more of the "all black" type. It features vivid painted tattoo decoration which would have signified rank, status and battle achievements which would have also appeared on the warrior's forearms, chest or both. This very old shield has seen extensive use. Hence, it is not in perfect condition. Some of its woven rattan is missing, but still retains about 70 percent. There is museum restoration to a two inch area on the right of the central boss which was likely damaged by a spear blow. Vertical cracks to the left side appear to have been glued and filled by a skilled restorer to preserve its structural integrity and appearance.
